What are Shear Connectors?

Shear connectors, also known as shear connector studs, shear studs, or headed shear studs, feature a flat, enlarged head on one end and a large, unthreaded shank. They are compatible with drawn arc stud welding processes, providing a weldable solution that locks concrete slabs to structural steel or timber beams. With composite action, horizontal shear transfer, and load sharing, shear connector studs can resist higher loads and prevent horizontal sliding and vertical lift.

Shear Connector Stud Sizes

The right shear connector for your application depends on the project requirements and structural design. We offer a range of shear connector stud sizes, including:

  • 5/8” x 2-11/16”
  • 5/8” x 3-3/16”
  • 5/8” x 4-3/16”
  • 5/8” x 6-3/16”

Shear Connector Studs vs. Headed Concrete Anchors

Shear connectors and headed concrete anchors have a similar style and construction; however, they differ in their diameters. Studs that are above 3/4” in diameter are typically referred to as shear connectors, while studs below 3/4” in diameter are called headed concrete anchors. Depending on the provider, they may be solely called headed concrete anchors.

Applications of Shear Connectors

Generally used in construction applications, shear connector studs provide reliable, vibration- and seismic-resistant mechanical fastening for steel-to-concrete connections. Shear connectors are used across embedding operations, including:
  • Bridge work
  • Decking
  • Beams
